I decided to give another go at the milkcrate project as i really enjoyed the last one i did and i feel i push myself alot to do very different things when im doing one of these, for those of you who do not know what the project is you can go here for more info. I did this milkcrate under standard rules, the rules being here. All of the sound was generated using various generative chains built all using the same sample recorded from the rocks.
Here is the finished piece, i am really happy with the outcome i was worried that by doing a piece this long that it could be to drawn out but after listening to it several times i think that will not be the case as there is so much going on underneath, Sit back and listen.
Ok so i decided to finnaly do the milkcreate challange, ive been putting it off for awhile and decided that today should be the day to do it because i wanted my source sound to be from our woods and we just sold our house and are moving next week so it was now or never.
The rules and more info about the milkcrate project can be found, Here
But basically The objective of milkcrate is to write, record and produce as much music as possible, creating a completely finished product within twenty- four hours of beginning the session. All materials and raw sources used to create music must be explicitly non- musical and All the materials must fit inside or on a milkcrate.
My Milkcrate challenge is being done with a macbook running Ableton Live, Alpha Lexicon Interface and a Sony Recorder and Sony Studio Headphones. My sound source was anything i could record out in the woods in one hour using the recorder.
Time Line:
7:12Pm - Start
7:13Pm - I pulled out my Sony Icd Recorder and went outside to the woods to get my source sound for the project i planned to be done before eight.
7:42Pm - I finished recording outside and am starting to put everything into my daw.
8:22Pm - Im working on getting chains working right together, i have the opening part made and im working on a few background textures now.
8:51Pm - Almost done editing the sounds for the drums and then going to plug them in and begin to work on getting all of that in order.
9:18Pm - I think i am done with most parts as far as the chains go and now im doing a test recording to see if it works right.
11:05Pm - Working on redoing the sounds for the drums.
12:05Pm - At this point i think i have got everything in line for the main parts and now im starting on edits, Heres a look at the piece without edits done.
1:35Am - I took a little break to eat some crackers and talk to nicole and now im back to work on some edits.
2:39Am - I decided to save what i was working on and restart my computer cause it was running a little funny and now ableton is not wanting to re-open the file, great.
2:43Am - ok i got it working.
2:50Am - This piece has like a 18 minute build and it still stays pretty minimal after that but it gets somewhat darker after 18 minutes into it.
2:51Am - All in all tho the piece is looking to be a little under 30 minutes long and is very very chill running at 120bpm
4:21Am - Just got done rendering the audio and no im going to listen to it while i upload some video to my computer.
4:34Am - Jeeze rendering video seems like the longest task ever.
4:55Am - i uploaded a video to vimeo, just about a minute of cut up video of ableton while im working.
5:03Am - Im thinking of taking a nap for a few hours, but anyway im working on getting some of the last little pieces in line and then im going to start making sure all the levels are right.
5:23Am - Im not sure if i want to passout where im sitting or get up and good look for food.
5:48Am - I just looked over my set up and im using 13 delays, 27+ velocity units and about the same ammount of note length units, i think at least 15 scales, and around 16 compressors just to name a few things.
7:10Am - Ok it will have been 12 hours of this in 3 minutes, Im still working on the levels so everything flows right
7:30Am - I think i have everything right where i want it but since im so tired and my judgment is failry jacked im going to crash now and sleep for a bit and then look over it one last time b4 rendering.
12:38Pm - I slept a little longer then i was planning to thankfully the phone kepts ringing, Back to work.
1:13Pm - Im rendering the first run through so i can sit back and listen, lets hope that goes well.
2:57Pm - Ok im pretty happy with it, it is deffinatlly a piece to sit down and lay back and listen to so you can hear all the detail but i guess most of my stuff is ment to be like that, now im just trying to figure out if i want to load it on here or soundcloud.
4:48Pm - Ok i just finnaly got the piece loaded to my server and now im working on a little cover for the release, talk about cutting everything close.
I really enjoyed doing this project it was really helpful when it came down to trying to be creative and work around limitations. Thanks Seb and everyone else who is part of Milkcrate.
